Urban Splash Footbridge, Manchester
Competition entry for new footbridge design
The competition brief was for a footbridge for a new canal junction in the regeneration area of New Islington in Manchester near to the Sport City complex. The bridge needed to span 2 aspects of the canal and thus land in three different places.
Our proposal was for a sickle shaped dish which appears to cut a new mouth into the canal junction, recalling the historical cutting of the canal network. This circular element has a profiled section to negotiate the various site levels and is suspended from a huge corten steel arm, thus allowing unrestricted access beneath for boats.
