The Homestead Transformation of Existing Home

The Challenge
The house sits in a magnificent setting but was in great need of a significant contemporary refurbishment, both in its external appearance as well as interior layout in order to support modern family life. Bringing in available light was somewhat of a challenge due to the fact that the house is set within the hillside on the majority of its sides on the ground floor.
Our Response
Conceptually, the approach was to utilise a cost effective way of working with the main structural elements, removing dated features such as the window arches, bring significantly more light into the relatively deep plan, and maximise on the relationship to the fabulous surrounding landscape. The existing property had numerous cellular spaces and so these were opened up to create a more streamlined interior with improved circulation flow.

The Outcome
The result is an spacious, open plan ground floor in which light floods in. The relationship to the outside is maximised at first floor level with large terraces around the rear of the property and directly off the impressive master bedroom suite. The exterior of the property was reorganised in terms of its windows and has been rendered with a contemporary white finish, contrasted by dark grey windows and contemporary dormers, whilst the ground floor storage wing has been integrated into the overall composition via the selection of materials. Internally the house is striking yet comfortable with a very large open plan living, kitchen, dining area that is organised around a central feature timber staircase that connects all of the floors, including the previously almost unusable area within the roof space.
