The Space Studio – congratulations on 25 years, being in business for that long is amazing in itself. Kevin's a good mate of mine and we met through teaching and mutual contacts and just being passionate architects really. For someone to build a business that's that good and that's successful, it's all about people not just about good design and good architecture. It's about having good staff and I think he's probably a half decent boss! He does so much for the industry and so much for the profession - he's passionate about teaching and he's passionate about bringing young people in the industry.

The architecture that The Space Studio do is outstanding, they are really good designers because they care. To go for that long in the construction industry is a big deal because they've been through recessions and the financial crisis of 2008 and to come out of that with good staff and a good business with a lot of repeat business says a lot.

Former Director,

Rooftop Housing Group

My relationship goes back at least 20 years. I asked them to do a small job on a project near St Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham to basically redesign the interior and they did an absolutely amazing job and they turned what was a quite a drab social housing project into somewhere that people really wanted to live in.

We had a project when I moved to an organisation called Rooftop Housing who specialise in working with gypsies and travellers and Kevin and The Space Studio pitched to provide the gypsy and traveller community some brand new homes / pods and did an absolutely amazing job using off-site construction. This grew into developing garage sites in Bishop's Cleeve near Cheltenham. The team designed across at least four sites, circa 50 brand new homes with contemporary design, absolutely amazing properties and I recognised that quality was what The Space Studio was all about.

Former Director of Estates, Birmingham Metropolitan College

Now Director of Estates, Aston University

I've worked with Space Studio for a number of years and find them outstanding in terms of their understanding of education and educational needs. Education is different to the commercial world and many other sectors and their ability to understand the needs of students and the needs of an educational institutions is outstanding and has been very much appreciated. The contributions they've put in have really transformed some of our estate and we're very appreciative for all that they've done in that way.

They've really worked very hard to understand our students, understand our needs and very much taken a non-commercial view of what we require. The designs that they've introduced into the work that we've had at Bmet have been transformational. They've influenced student behaviour and had a significant impact on the way we have operated. We are not a commercial organisation and we can't pretend to be, but they have worked with us incredibly well and understood that. And for that, we will be forever grateful.

We've been working with The space Studio on our new design centre in Digbeth, they've been great to work with, great collaborators, very interested in the materiality and they've come up with some really interesting ideas. This is the first commission we've done with them and they've been heavily involved in getting our space ready. It's great to have had them here and congratulations to 25 years, it's a great achievement.

The centre is to bring people together in the construction sector, we're material suppliers so a lot of what you can see around, whether it be the bricks, the facade materials, but also everything from drainage to landscaping so we're going to have a wide range of things on display and we want to have it as an event space but also to look at the challenges that the industry has whether it's new regulations, fire safety or sustainability, we've got key areas that are going to be looking at all of those things in this space.

Director,

EMMAUS Consulting

I've known The Space Studio for 15 years or more and we've worked together on projects in education, industrial, commercial and I've always found that the team are very ready to work collaboratively within the project and within the wider team and always take ownership in terms of what needs to be delivered successfully. I've always found that we have a very good working relationship, it's very open, very honest.

We have managed to unlock projects, resolve challenges and overcome obstacles on the way always keeping the client first and foremost in our vision to make it successful for all parties. They are an SME scale business and so are we and that allows us to bespoke our service to our clients. That's a common language between us and we find that it works very well for us and very well for the clients. There's a client that we've been working with for five years together and we've delivered probably about 18 - 20 projects over that five year period. All of them quite challenging in their own right, of different scales, and some of them working or being delivered in parallel at the same time with each other or overlapping timescales. With a fantastic client, we've got a fantastic client team and we found that the sort of energy and relationship between all of us has been a real bonus and really helped the projects be delivered in a really good environment whilst achieving the client's objectives.

The the most important or the most memorable aspects of our working relationship has been the various competitions and input in the early stages of the design where we're just bouncing ideas off each other.

The Space Studio have got respect for me and my talents, and I've got respect for them and their talents. We're friends but we respect each other and our professionalism that goes with that. To me, that's more important than anything else because at the end of the day when you truly believe in people it's not just about design, it's about interacting with people and producing good design as a team with mutual respect.

The fact that they've been going for 25 years is no mean feat so good luck to them and long may they continue and be successful.

RBSL

Leigh Roberts, Industrialisation Programme Manager/ Head of Production

“We partnered with the space studio architects & designers to support our Industrialisation Programme here at RBSL Telford. We wanted to bring in their skills and expertise in the design aspects of major conversion, infrastructure, and new build projects. The Programme was a significant investment (circa £19M) to re-establish an armoured vehicle manufacturing and test facility the Programme ran between 2022 and 2024.

The space studio operated like an extension of the RBSL team, they really bought in to the importance of the work we do, I was impressed with their passion, work ethic, flexibility, and commitment throughout supporting us to overcome some extremely challenging milestones. They also helped set our design ambitions, positively challenge the briefs, problem solve, and pushed us to make RBSL a great place to work via the designed environment.  With their support and experience along with RBSL Product and Manufacturing knowledge we maximised the design and value through our contractors. The result was a Programme delivered on cost and to schedule and some long term relationships developed for future projects.”

Arts Cafe Testimonial

Len Cox, client, Arts Café, St Martin in the Bullring

"We felt they were totally committed to the project and I can’t recall ever having to ‘chase’ them for information or to ‘hurry things up. The design features of the Arts Cafe are essential for giving us a distinctive edge in a very competitive market. It creates customer interest, visual appeal and helps us to shake off the traditional church image particularly in the lucrative corporate market.”

St Basil's Resettlement Centre, Birmingham

St Basils Testimonial

Jean Templeton, Chief Executive, St Basils

"St Basils first worked with the space studio in the redesign and refurbishment of our Resettlement Centre in Birmingham. The result is a fabulous space which, over 5 years on, still inspires and motivates young people, staff and visitors.

Unlike some designers who can only create at high cost, our experience is that the space* studio produce a highly creative and practical solution to suit your needs and as far as possible, your resources. For St Basils, that has meant we haven't had to sacrifice good design through limited funds."
