Transformation of Former Technical College to Hotel for Premier Inn

On the edge of Coventry city centre, a dilapidated former technical college building of local importance needed to become a 100-bedroom hotel for Premier Inn, as part of MCD Developments' wider regeneration of the Earlsdon area. The entire transformation had to be delivered within an 11-month programme, while still meeting Premier Inn's strict brand guidelines inside the constraints of an existing, historic building.

The Challenge

Our Response

A new contemporary lightweight storey was built above to provide additional rooms. At the heart of the design is a double-height internal atrium within the new foyer, creating a genuine sense of arrival while also revealing a number of the building's original art-deco interior features. Meeting Premier Inn's brand standards within a listed, characterful shell required close collaboration  throughout the project.

The Outcome

The result is a 100-bedroom hotel delivered to an unusually tight 11-month programme, successfully balancing brand consistency with the character of the original building. The atrium and retained art-deco detailing give guests a memorable arrival experience, while the building itself has been given a new lease of life as part of the broader Earlsdon regeneration.
