Interlocking Cubes Contemporary Extension in Harborne, Birmingham
A traditional Victorian house on Kingscote Road, Harborne, needed a kitchen extension. Sat within the Calthorpe Estates conservation area, it required the design to be sensitive to its context. The brief called for substantially more usable space at the rear, including room for dining and a dedicated reading area, without compromising the character of the existing house or the wider street.
The Challenge
Our Response
The design is built around two interlocking cubes: a lower cube that works around the low-level roof of the existing bay window, and a larger block that forms the main extension to the kitchen.
The Outcome
This contemporary composition sits in deliberate contrast to the traditional Victorian rear elevation, creating a substantial new kitchen space along with a dining area and a reading nook featuring its own picture window. A new courtyard and wet room were also created as part of the scheme, and the design received unconditional approval from Calthorpe Estates.
