Refurbishment of a Chalet Style House in Harborne, Birmingham
A typical 1970s chalet-style house in Harborne needed transforming into a contemporary, open-plan home. The brief called for maximising views and daylight throughout which was no small task in a dwelling defined by the compartmentalised, low-light character typical of its era.
The Challenge
Our Response
The ground floor was opened up as much as possible, introducing an open-tread staircase, clear sightlines through the house from the front door, and a large expanse of folding/sliding doors at the rear to flood the space with light. Upstairs, the same theme of openness continued: existing flat ceilings were removed to open the master bedroom up to the steep roof pitch, and new electronic rooflights were added to create a dramatic, light-filled volume. Externally, the house was rendered and given a new front door, completing the shift from a tired, dated dwelling to a home defined by light and energy.
