EH Smith Digbeth Design Centre Bar & Reception Desk

IMG_5529.jpg

What we did

The design process involved a lot of conceptual research to allow us to be guided by the story of the building to create more authentic and meaningful additions to the space. There was also a lot of research on EH Smith themselves and the processes involved in brickwork. This included a visit to their Clerkenwell Showroom to gain further knowledge and insight.

We came up with a few different proposals, including the use of reclaimed bricks, stamped brass fins, and solid metal balustrades. Throughout the design process we came up with the final design of a brick bar with a terrazzo top with brick faces in-bedded into the surface for a unique talking point, this design was also repeated for the reception desk to continue the theme. Our hands-on approach was key and included placing each brick into the terrazzo tops by hand.

Why they came to us

The new EH Smith Digbeth Design Centre was a collaboration between multiple designers, architects, contractors and consultants. We were commissioned to design the main bar and the reception desk, having a track record of being able to zone in on smaller aspects of projects and our experience in the hospitality sector.

What we achieved together

The bar is a key showstopper feature of the space and it's design reflects the rich industrial heritage of the building, creating an interesting feature within the main space for people to gather, meet, and be inspired. It anchors the space visually while maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The design is reflected in the reception desk, which is one of the first impressions when entering in from the side door of the building.
