FFE&E and Re-Design of Library for Birmingham City University
Curzon Library had been completed by another architect a year prior, but its layout wasn't working as hard as it could for students. We were commissioned to carry out a full FF&E review and re-design, tasked with optimising the space for how it was actually being used. Understanding the real issues meant working closely with both the Student Union and Library staff to hear directly from the people relying on the space every day.

Our Response
Working from that consultation, our design proposals focused on efficiency and flexibility by creating new, more efficient working areas and more appropriate breakout spaces throughout the library. Rather than starting from scratch, some of the original furniture was re-upholstered and redeployed into other University buildings, making the refresh both considered and cost-effective.
The Outcome
The re-design generated an additional 107 seats without compromising the quality of the working environment. Since completion, library use dramatically increased, and feedback from students in the National Student Satisfaction Survey was very positive: a clear sign the space now works as hard for students as it should.

We often get them involved in the trickier projects that need an innovative, design led, yet realistic approach, typically within a very demanding timeframe.
The range of projects they have completed for us include major interior refurbishments of teaching accommodation, fit out work, signage design and implementation, and an OFSTED compliant nursery. This range of projects is testament to their ability, flexibility and attitude to working in partnership with the Estates Department and or other consultants."
