Conversion of Grade II Listed Building into Luxury Apartments

This project was the conversion of a Grade II listed office building into four luxury apartments and one 3 storey townhouse in Birmingham city centre for Asquith Homes, balancing modern apartment standards with heritage constraints. The top floor apartment sits under the original roof structure where existing head height wasn't sufficient for comfortable living. Parking and cycle space was also required.

The Challenge

Our Response

The floor had to be lowered to create the necessary clearance for this to be a liveable space whilst preserving the the wooden post trusses as a feature rather than treat it as an obstacle. All the apartments are thoughtfully designed with large open plan kitchen / living room areas, making the most of the living space and natural light. Each apartment also benefits from its own secure parking space and cycling storage facility in the basement, accessible from the side street.

The Outcome

Original features of the building have been preserved, such as the grand central front entrance doorway, and the existing wooden queens post trusses in the top floor apartment, which offer a unique feature. More head height has been created in the roof apartment by lowering the floor level for a more comfortable living space.
