The Space* Studio: Education Project

#750 BCU STEAMhouse

STEAMhouse is a centre aimed at encouraging the collaboration of the, science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) sectors.

Working with staff from the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design and BCU’s Research Innovation and Enterprise Department, the project started as a series of interviews with key BCU staff to ascertain the need for such a facility, including identifying a number of precedents in the UK and Europe. Following this, generic designs were produced which in turn led to a detailed feasibility design for the former Typhoo tea factory building in Digbeth which was used as part of a submission to central Government, ultimately receiving £14m worth of funding.

Phase 1 was conceived as a short term solution housed in a former car showroom on Digbeth High Street and our design proposals (again, working with the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design staff) were used to help securing funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the Arts Council England.

STEAMhouse enables businesses to develop innovative ideas and creative products in a collaborative setting. The design has spaces designed to encourage businesses to incubate new ideas, and prototype new creative products and services.
