Following the huge interest for our project at Rawmarsh College we were commissioned to design a similar facility for a nearby college.
The centre had to be carefully designed to provide a visual identity from
the road yet connect to the existing buildings, and provide access from
the front for visitors and from the side for staff and students.
The building houses a reception area, seminar rooms, exhibition space, a café, offices, and a large flexible community / lecture meeting space.
The form of the design mimics the existing roof of the college but in a more contemporary fashion. The use of translucent cladding will allow the building to ‘glow’ at night, thus transforming it into a local landmark.
The massing of the building uses a central atrium as the principal circulation
route but also to facilitate natural ventilation.
In terms of the detail, it has been designed to give the impression that many of the pieces float and no not touch each other, further adding to the sense of lightness despite the size of the building.
