Client: Matt & Kate Upton
Contractor: IDQ Refurbishment
Completion: August 2007
The brief was to replace an uninspiring 1960's brick built extension with a modern space which would act as a family orientated space.
The pavillion was designed to blur the boundaries between itself and
the existing house, and between the inside and the outside. Folding /
sliding 2800mm high aluminium doors open up to connect the space to a
contemporary extneral space which features an angled perimeter wall
(which is lit up at night) which has an integral garden seat.
Timber glulam frames form the principal structure of the pavillion, offering an appropriate, yet contemporary aesthetic for an addition to an older building.
Internally, the pavillion houses an open plan kitchen / living space which
is physically and visually connected to the existing house due to the wall to the rear dining room being removed. This room, complete with bay window, is connected to the external space via a timber decked area. This raised deck area mirrors the step inside the pavillion which was determined by the floor levels of the previous extension.
This step helps divide the kitchen area at the top and the family area at
the lower level.
The project also involved the creation of a utility room and wc off the
existing hallway.
