Rotherham, South Yorkshire
Client: Rawmarsh City Learning Centre
Contractor: to be confirmed
Status: planning stage
The project is designed to bring new life, as well as new facilities to this City Learning Centre. Sat on a site next to an existing caretakers house, the scheme houses seminar rooms, computer labs, and music rooms.
The design is a contemporary pod which appears to float over the landscape,
finally be grounded by an extended floor plate which extends out of the atrium
space. This atrium is used as an intermediate space between the two buildings,
and also negotiates between the uneven geometry of the caretaker's house and the new proposal.
Working with engineers Halcrow Youlles, the design is based on a series of glulam timber frames which create a dynamic section and, in turn, an exciting place to study in. These glulams extend beyond the new
accommodation to meet the existing building whilst reinforcing the external
space with overhead sun shading.
Internally, a break out / cafe space occupies the atrium, computer labs the ground floor, and music technology spaces on the first floor.
