Social Housing development

Birmingham

Client: confidential
Status: feasibility stage

This feasibility study was to consider a row of large Victorian detached houses which are in various states of disrepair. The client asked us to make various proposals for the demolition of these properties, to be replaced by a new development which is more suited to contemporary family life.

The preferred proposal (top image) suggests a series of 3 storey townhouses

along the street frontage, reinforcing the existing building line, street rhythm,

massing, and scale.

...what makes the proposal unique are the annex buildings at the rear which are linked via an elevated walkway.

However, what makes the proposal unique are the smaller, 2 storey, annex buildings at the rear which are linked by an elevated walkway. This annex is suitable for extended families, elderly relatives, or disabled family members in need of their own private space.

The space between the front townhouse and rear annex is utilised as a

private courtyard / structured garden, allowing both aspects of the house to have an secluded view, along with a buffer zone for privacy and security.

The townhouses have undercroft parking at the ground level, offering valuable off-road parking.
