The project was to convert a large, under-utilised loft space in this large detached house.
Whilst the brief called for a contemporary space in both layout and aesthetics, it was also important that the new space was seamlessly integrated into the property in terms of the access to it.
The space is split into 2 key areas, defined by a necessary step in the floor (due to the structure of the building), one area is used as a home office, and the other as a gymnasium / leisure area. The space also features an en-suite bathroom.
One side of the space houses approximately 250 feet worth of shelving for books, all of which has integral lighting and is discreetly hidden behind magnetic closing doors.
The other side of the space maximizes on the available daylight via a series of large rooflights, one of which articulates a reading area with a view over the adjacent golf course.
Aesthetically the scheme has a simple palette of timber to match the existing floorboards and a simple white finish to reflect the available daylight around the space, making it feel light and airy.
The potential re-sale value of the property was also explored, and consequently the design is ready-made for conversion into 2 bedrooms, both with en-suite facilities, in terms of plumbing and electrical infrastructure, as well as natural daylight and means of escape. This approach means that the clients can use the space for what they personally need, safe in the knowledge that it can easily be converted to maximize on its value and desirability.
