Completion: April 2003
The project was for a refurbishment of the existing ground and first floor store as well as an extension into the adjacent retail unit. Taking this expansion as an opportunity, the whole strategy and layout of the store was questioned and changed with a view to raising the profile of the already well established store but also to mark the new arrival of several prestigious brands.
In addition to the sideways expansion, a new mezzanine floor to match that of the existing units was constructed in the newly utilized unit. This complete run of mezzanine floor across the three units created a significant area for stock and staff facilities.
The new design featured a dramatic steel and glass central staircase which split at its landing to provide customers with direct routes to either the male or female sections of the store. At the foot of this staircase was a coffee bar, created to offer customers the opportunity for an extended stay in the store. Its function was also to draw early morning passers by in for a coffee on their way to work and whilst there they can look through a series of folding glass screens to the merchandise beyond.
The interior concept was to create the impression of space despite the high density of clothing. The consistent placement of the cashier desks and changing rooms provided an element of orientation to the space. Computer controlled coloured lighting was used to add atmosphere and to define specific areas.
The stand design was inspired by and based on the strong visual branding of the company with the intention of making a big statement. In effect, the design language was a three dimensional manifestation of the brand.
