Harborne Cricket Club as founded in 1868 and is one of the leading clubs in the Midlands and one of the few Birmingham & District League Clubs to be based in the City.
The club has a pavilion that is in need to repair or replacement, and we
were asked to propose a concept design which can be used to help
generate funding and sponsorship for the project.
Three versions of the concept design were produced ranging from complete new build to part refurbishment, but all of the options proposed additional functions for both the cricket activities and community uses. The design had to take into account Sport for England requirements such as female changing rooms, as well as social spaces
for raising revenue.
The façade of the design is based on the conceptual idea of a batsman’s innings. Often defensive at the start, the bowler would be faced with the full face of the bat. However, as the innings progressed and flourished, more attacking shots would lead to the thinner edges of the bat being presented. The façade is therefore made up of a combination of wider and thinner timber panels which capture the spirit of the batsman’s innings. The consequent reduction of glazing helps to
control the temperature inside the building as well as reducing the costs that are associated with large areas of glazing.
