Student Halls of Residence, Northampton
Client: Citadel Homes
Status: Feasibility study/outline design |
The proposal needed to deal with 11 tree preservation orders scattered around the site whilst providing a critical mass of student rooms.
The University of Northampton is increasing its provision of courses and thus increasing student numbers. We were commissioned by a private developer to design private student accommodation on a site adjacent to the main campus. The heavily wooded site had numerous tree preservation orders which the design had to factor in. This was achieved via a series of "fingers" with each one extending as far as it could before meeting a tree. The aesthetics of the proposal mimic the random pattern of leaves whilst the structure draws reference from the trunk of a tree.
key points
- two large 4 storey accommodation blocks with central communal hubs
- separate amenity block with post graduate housing above
- buildings raised above ground to allow circulation across the site and to accommodate car parking
- internal organisation more efficient than traditional 6 bedded flats due to central hubs
