"Squeezebox" travelling pavilion, Yorkshire
Client: Yorkshire Forward
Status: Competitoon entry |
The pavilion embodies a sense of the theatrical, rather like a circus or fair arriving in town in a series of lorries creating a sense of anticipation. The temporary building will then be unpacked and 'rolled out', no longer will the cry be "roll up, roll up...", but rather "roll up, roll out..." The process will be like a magic trick like producing a rabbit out of a hat!
The pavilion was designed with a series of components designed to fit into a number of standard containers. Upon assembly though these containers do not become redundant but instead as supporting structure, back-of-house facilities or to provide enclosed areas to articulate the interior. The arrangement of the containers facilitates various configurations of the pavilion. The roof arrives as a flattened grid-shell form which is "pulled up" into position, whilst the floor is unfurled in a similar manner to the slats of a bed. The concept of an expanding and contracting form is reminiscent of an accordion, or 'squeezebox'.
