Split-Level house, Bickmarsh, Warwickshire
Client: Ms S Thomas
Status: Full Planning Permission received |
This innovative and contemporary house was awarded planning permission at the first attempt in a notably traditional area. The layout is in an "upside-down" manner with bedrooms on the lower floor so that the key living spaces can enjoy the fantastic views around the site.
The site is set back from a road of traditional dormer bungalows looking out towards the countryside and a private orchard with a fantastic south-west orientation. Because of the height restrictions created by the dormer bungalows and the clients requirement of 4 double bedrooms, the proposal cuts half a floor into the landscape. This creates a very exciting series of internal spaces with the living area on the original ground level and the kitchen / dining on a mezzanine level offering views beyond the site to the horizon.
key points
- the north and east perimeters house cellular service spaces and bedrooms
- the living spaces are on the south-west side to enjoy sunlight and a view of the orchard
- a ramp descends to the bedroom level over which a bridge connects the living and kitchen / dining spaces
- a single span roof with a glazed slot allows daylight to penetrate to the lower level
