"Room with a view" Queen Elizabeth Hall Competition
Status: Competition Entry
|
A "room with a view" was a competition entry in collaboration with structural engineers Buro Happold . The competition was for a demountable room for London in the year 2010 to be placed upon the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Our conceptual approach was influenced by the telescope and kaleidascope. As a practice we are fascinated by ‘viewing’ and framing views’ and were keen to create a voyeuristic/interactive installation. We explored these ideas with particular reference to proportions of 3 and 6 representing the potential for 360 degree views from the site and the 366 days of 2012 (a leap year). Strategic diagrams were drawn up to represent our thinking in plan form and overlayed with a 3/6 proportional grid representative of the footprint within which the installation should sit on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
We also considered the importance of how the installation should transform almost daily to represent the memory of each visitor. The room becomes a personal space for each and every visitor.
A hotel room is normally a small part of a trip or journey. It is a functional space which offers its visitor the facilities to rest, sleep and wash. “A Room with a View” contradicts this by becoming the experience - the room is the adventure . . . it is the destination! The room is a contemplation space for all cultures, ages, genders. Everyone relaxes, thinks, reflects and dreams differently. The interior is a transitional space which offers the flexibilty for each visitor to create their own personal experience. They can alter the furniture arrangement, slide the bed, slide screens and panels to frame views, visitors can even choose to sleep under the stars. |
