Roof conversion and contemporary extension, Harborne, Birmingham
Client: Mr and Mrs Newbold
Status: Completed July 2006 |
The extension of this Victorian house was completed in two phases, firstly a roof conversion and then a contemporary glass extension which replaced a traditional conservatory. Both contemporary elements shared the same aesthetic in order to be read together and express the juxtaposition between the lightweight new elements and the heavy existing house.
The roofspace was converted into a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. Due to the size, geometry and structure of the existing roof, a new dormer window was necessary. However, instead of a traditional dormer we designed a contemporary glass fronted and roofed dormer, the front of which could completely fold back to open the whole space to the air and surrounding views. The glass extension acts as an intermediate space between the kitchen and garden and helps to bring more daylight into the previously dark kitchen. The extension has electronically opening rooflights to allow natural ventilation.
