Remedy Cafe, Queens Medical School, The University of Nottingham

Due to its location within the University's Medical School, the concept for the cafe was that of "Remedy". The space is a combination of the Medical School's canteen along with general breakout space, and is split into three distinct zones.
Zone One is the "Remedy Deli" which offers food which can heal you, relax you and re-fuel you. Zone Two is "The Park" which recognises the psychological benefits of the outdoors and as such brings the outside in, and allows students to have indoor picnics or even sit on a park bench. Zone Three is "The Reading Room", an chance to escape, with knowledge being a remedy.
These three zones are linked together with bold graphic walls. Silhouettes of figures wrap around the space with lines of text, key quotes and inspirational thoughts to reinforce the concept. The innovative use of materials (grass and leaves on digitally printed onto vinyl flooring) makes the spaces feel playful, perfect for time out. The careful consideration of bespoke joinery items was needed to integrate catering equipment within the servery and to navigate the customers effectively. The whole fit out period took just 4 weeks to suit the university's calendar.
