Private Housing, Cheltenham

Client: Confidential
Status: Feasibility Stage

This scheme occupies a restricted site in a picturesque village. Due to the tight nature of the site and the necessity for parking, parking had to be incorporated into the footprint of the design. This resulted in a two property, three storey proposal with a semi-open ground floor.

The modernist architectural language of the scheme is in direct response to the context which has a strong rectilinear character. The ground floor has some accommodation but the majority is on the upper floors which means that the living and kitchen spaces can enjoy a panoramic view to the countryside at the rear. Openings are restricted on the side elevations due to neighbouring properties so the daylight is predominantly captured from the front and rear aspects.

Two feature spiral staircases occupy the wings of the development and help to define the strong spine walls at the edges. The elevations are articulated via the need for daylight and privacy. At night time the scheme would transmit and glow like a beacon.

key points

  • contemporary housing in a predominantly traditional area
  • the building appears to sit on a small plinth which helps to reinforce its surrounding frame
  • privacy screens on elevation are not full height to maximise on daylight
  • simple structure to ease construction
