Next Wave: Shelter & Kiosk Design Competition

Status: Competition entry

Our proposal is inspired by beach paraphernalia such as deckchairs, windbreaks, beach huts, beach balls, and children’s pinwheels suggesting a kaleidoscope of colour. We are indeed proposing “Happy Architecture”!

We propose that the 4 shelters are essentially the same to create a unified sequence leading to the kiosk which is an adapted version of these shelters. The cranked geometry of the shelter ensures that they can be positioned to provide shelter from prevailing winds. The sequence is inspired by Paul Klee’s concept of “taking a line for a walk” with both the plan arrangements and the undulating rooflines.

The back of the spine wall accommodates an additional seating area, albeit under less cover, but more sheltered from the prevailing winds behind the concrete spine wall.

The coloured glass canopy (developed in collaboration with a local glass company) aims to be reminiscent of the quality of light that illuminates children’s seaside pinwheels in a similar manner to stained glass. The sun hitting this roof will project a wonderful jewel-like shifting coloured pattern on the ground beneath the canopy.

The vertical glass slots in the spine wall add to this kaleidoscope, especially at nighttime when the slots are lit from within with power generated by rooftop photovoltaics. Rainwater is collected at the top of the wall and run down through it, dispensed via drainage water rills running perpendicular out towards the sea.

The ground plane beneath the canopy is punctuated by a series of random concrete blocks set between the water rills. These reinforce the geometry of the shelter and their suggested linear formation draws reference from the groynes that descend into the water. These blocks also offer additional seating opportunities in sociable positions.

Numerous signage advertising and signage opportunities exist on its continuously folding external walls.
