Loft 118, Smithfield Buildings, Tib Street, Manchester
Client: Jonny Singh and Tessa Wheeler
Status: Completed August 2005 |
Originally a one-bed, two bathroom apartment, we redesigned the interior to create a two bedroom apartment and a much-improved kitchen area, thus significantly increasing the value of the property for a very modest outlay.
This was achieved by 'sliding' the kitchen area forwards to meet a structural column that helped define the living space but also created too large a circulation space. The space formerly occupied by an en-suite bathroom, circulation, and the aforementioned kitchen was re-configured to create a good-sized second bedroom. This room was naturally ventilated into the developments atrium space and borrowed daylight was achieved by a large area of etched glazing.
The new kitchen was an inexpensive white gloss kitchen but the addition of a thick 'glass green' worktop brings the space to life. The reconfigured space has also resulted in the dining and living areas flipping over to enhance the spatial relationship between the kitchen and the dining areas.
Additional storage spaces were also created to improve the practicality of the loft apartment.
