Housing at Bishops Cleve, Gloucestershire
Client: Rooftop Housing Group
Status: Planning stage following design competition win January 2009 |
The project was won following a design competition in which we beat two very established social housing architectural practices. The selection process included a concept design but also judging my a residents committee who chose who they would like to develop the project with. Our innovative house type proposals were also a significant factor in the judges' decision.
The scheme is set across two separate sites, both of which have challenging shapes and restricted access for a range of 2,3 and 4 bed houses. Our proposal responded to the density, plot sizes, vehicular circulation, and over-looking issues of the existing housing estate. The main site is arranged perpendicular to the passing steam railway line for an open feel and to maximise on views. Whilst the proposal has a contemporary feel the aesthetics are appropriate for a rural development such as this.
key points
- resident liaison will be a key factor as the project moves towards a planning application
- innovative house type designs including a DDA compliant bungalow with guest / carer quarters
- innovative family houses with rear annexes suitable for extended families, elderly relatives, DDA independent living
- bungalows located in areas were overlooking and proximity to other houses is an issue to maximise the site density
