Department of Visual Communication, Birmingham Institute of Art & Design
Client: Birmingham City University
Status: Completed September 2006 |
Working within the constraints of a concrete frame building several spaces were opened up and reconfigured including the creation of a dramatic 'milo' room.
The showpiece of the scheme is an infinity horizon photographic studio which is used for both still photography and video, either manually or by a computer controlled milo machine. The green screen facilitates post-production graphic techniques. Other areas of the Department were also transformed including the photographic dark rooms and wet processing area, computer and seminar rooms, and general teaching spaces.
key points
- very tight design time and construction period within summer vacation period
- same project team as the Birmingham School of Architecture project the previous year
- new facility places BIAD above other similar institutions
- milo room used for commercial enterprises too
