County Point apartments, Ebbw Vale, Wales
Client: Mon-X Developments
Status: Feasibility stage / outline design |
This project was won in an invited design competition against a number of local practices who specialise in affordable housing.
We were commissioned to design a mixed-use scheme of ground floor retail, townhouses, and apartments. The design respects the importance of the corner in reference to the former County Hotel on the site which then 'falls away' either side to accommodate the townhouses and a split level food retail unit. The apartments are all accessed by a single core with external deck access resulting in a very high net to gross ratio.
key points
- lower ground level parking set within existing topography to avoid excavation
- all apartments designed in an open plan format, many with balconies
- facades influenced by modernist architecture resulting in a layered facade to articulate the building and create balcony spaces
- extremely positive feedback from Ebbw Vale planning department
