Contemporary extension, Harborne, Birmingham
Client: Mr & Mrs Upton
Status: Completed August 2007 |
This contemporary extension provides a family space with strong links to the rear garden whilst juxtaposing the Victorian architecture of the house.
The contemporary extension replaced an uninspiring 1960s brick extension which the clients referred to as "a crime scene"! It is designed to blur the boundaries between the interior spaces of the house and itself, and between the inside and the outside. Folding / sliding doors open up to connect to the external space which is defined by a angled perimeter wall. Timber glulam frames form the principal structure providing a contemporary aesthetic with some resonance to the existing building.

- open plan kitchen / living / play space
- interior reconfigured to open up dining room and create wc and utility rooms
