Blackthorn Mews, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham

The project is a mews-style development consisting of only 8 units, creating a small community. The existing building has been designed with a new penthouse extension to complement 2 other apartments at the front, whilst the courtyard aspect of the scheme features 3 three storey townhouses and 2 duplex apartments.

The site enjoys a position at the edge of St Paul's Square in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter which has recently made an application to become a World Heritage Site. The proposal is for a prestigious development in a London-esque Mews style format which offers privacy and security but also a sense of community. Due to the restricted size of the site and the need for parking the townhouses have been elevated to first floor level, all being accessed by an external deck. These large townhouses all enjoy open plan living as well as a generous, private roof terrace.

The existing street fronting building will retain its current commercial ground floor use in line with Planning Policy for the area, whereas the first and second floor offices will be converted into prestigious apartments with views onto the Square. A two-storey penthouse has been proposed on top of this building to provide additional accommodation but also to act as a transition between the neighbouring building and the traditional streetscape. Two duplex apartments at the rear of the site complete the development.

Elsewhere the scheme provides a passenger lift, refuse area, cycle storage, and the courtyard will be a landscaped 'shared space'.
