Black and White Cottages, Aston Sommerville, Evesham
Client: Rooftop Housing Group
Status: Feasibility Stage |
These cottages from 1776 have fallen into a state of disrepair and an insensitive rear extension has undermined their character. Furthermore, the small, cellular accommodation is unsuitable for modern day living.
The scheme essentially brings this character full building back to life by removing the unsatisfactory rear extension and replacing it with an open plan space which makes family living more practical. By flipping the interiors around we have been able to put the focus onto the rear of the property to maximise on the wonderful views to the countryside beyond. The adjacent garage site has been considered for 2/3 bedroom key worker housing.
key points
- due to a lack of private amenity space the key worker housing has a grass roof garden
- facade of cottages to be retained and restored
- scheme is suitable for Rural Exemption as it aims to encourage local people to stay in the village
- scheme considered for Government innovation funding
