|Atrium Coffee Shop, Dudley College
Client: Dudley College
Status: Finished September 2011
The project centered around the reconfiguration and refurbishment of the main entrance coffee shop/ snack bar at the campus. The existing space had been fragmented by a number of additions over time which had resulted in both an inefficient and tired-looking interior.
There were two main requirements, to be refurbished as a contemporary food and beverage facility and to remain as a access point and hub for pedestrian traffic. However, these needs were complicated by the large number of occupants and the high ceilings with their overhead walkways, meaning that noise was an issue.
The design successfully realigned through routes and catering facilities while mitigating noise with the introduction of acoustic ceilings and material sails suspended from the structure. The use of bold colour and contemporary seating of different styles makes for a very welcome and sociable space.
