Arts Cafe , St Martin in the Bullring church, Birmingham
Client: Church of England
Status: Completed August 2003 for the launch of The Bullring |
As part of the extensive development of The Bullring shopping centre, St Martin's, at the heart of the development was refurbished and extended. The Arts Cafe provides the church with a commercial foothold in the development.
The design of the Arts Cafe is heavily influenced by the context of the surrounding City and the church itself. The space was designed to transform from day to night to welcome different clientele. This was done via a series of voiles portraying historic images of Birmingham for the day time and abstract images in the evening. The use of colour changing lighting also allowed the mood to be altered accordingly. The cafe has become a popular venue for events for professional bodies such as the RIBA and BDI.
